“Ok. I don’t know how this appointment will go with this guy. Lets just trust the Lord to do what’s right in his eye-sight,” I said to Tammi as we prepared to walk into a building to meet yet another complete stranger to invite him on our team of ministry partners. It’s 4pm on a sunny Monday in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We pray in the car and get out to make our way inside. I open the door for Tammi to go in first and I follow. We are thinking to ourselves, “We don’t even know what this guy looks like!”
As soon as we both enter, a man confidently says, “Jerrah and Tammi!”
“Hey, Kent!” I said, sounding like I already knew him.
“Glad to see you guys.” he said as we then exchanged small talk for just a minute. Then in that same moment a Pastor, who holds his church services in that same building, walks pass. Time seems to instantly slow down as I recognize this man as the same Pastor I have been trying to get in contact with for over 3 years! I thought to myself, “Oh snap! I better do something!”
Impulsively, I turn to him as he walks by and yell out his name in a way that made him turn abruptly to look me in the eyes.
Walking up to him to shake his hand and introducing myself, I said “You don’t know me but many people have told me about you and how I need to get in touch with you.” I proceeded to explain to him what Tammi and I were doing in Fort Wayne. I shared with him how our goal of returning to South Africa to minster to college students.
“Come into my office,” he said. We walked in and sat with him for a couple minutes and set up a time to meet him the very next day. We thanked him and left for our appointment with Kent-the original person we came to meet. We shared our ministry with Kent and we left encouraged that another person heard about what God is doing in South Africa. He expressed he wants to partner in some way with us as we go.
The next day, we returned to the same building to meet with the Pastor we bumped into. “I can’t believe this is happening!” I thought. My excitement was evident as we began to share with him the problem South Africans are facing and the vision for why the gospel needs to be shared there, now more than ever. We get half way through our presentation with him and he stops us…
“You can stop right there. You don’t have to “sell” me anymore about what you are doing,” he said to our amazement. “I’m sold!” He continued to explain that meeting him was good timing and that this meeting was indeed a “God-thing” that he wanted to invest in. “We want to support you guys. Also, I want you to come by my church on Sunday to present to them.” With wide eyes and smiles we agreed to coming back in two weeks.
This is just one of the many appointments where we have seen God’s fingerprint from the beginning of a meeting to the end. Stay tuned for more updates!
