A Gripping Reality: My Encounter with Cults

A Gripping Reality: My Encounter with Cults

One morning I was sitting at a table in a busy area while on campus when two men in suits approached me.

“Hello there, may I sit here please?”

“Sure, have a seat,” I said.

After introducing ourselves…

“My friend and I are here on campus representing a church. Tammi, have you ever heard of Mother God?”

It was as if the bustling in the entire room stopped. My team mate was recently warned our team of a cult on campus that teaches about the “Mother God”…

“Well, how can God be a father with children if there was no mother, Tammi?”

He was so poised. So confident. So articulate. Moreover- we had the same NIV BIBLE!

I piece of me couldn’t believe I was hearing this. As much as I wanted to get up and leave, an even stronger pull was inside me to stay and learn more about this man and find what in life lead him to make this decision.

Sadly, I found that Brandon made this decision just 6 months ago. He switched from being a Christian after claiming he found the “truth”-

“Tammi, I went to every church in Cape Town searching for the truth. One night I got on my knees and prayed that God would reveal himself to me and the very next day, this organization came knocking on my door.”

He tried to convince me that entering into heaven requires more than just accepting Christ. He said you have to follow the passover laws and eat of Jesus flesh and drink his blood…

If you are reading this, this is an unmistakable trademark of a cult. There is always a problem with Jesus. Its, “You have to accept Jesus AND [ fill in the blank]”  or it’s, “Jesus wasnt really God in the flesh.”

Cults appear to be like Christians but if you listen very closely they always, always appear to you to work your way into heaven by doing good deeds AND OR they down play the deity of Jesus Christ never admitting Jesus is God who appeared to us as a human being.

I heard a wise man once say…

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ is has come in the flesh is from God but every spirit that doesnt acknowledge Jesus is not from God. ~ 2 Tim 4:3 and 1 John 4:2-3.

After listening to his story I asked if I could share something from the bible. I pointed to Ephesians 2:8-9 that Christians are saved by grace and that we cannot earn our way into heaven by mere good deeds. I also showed him Romans 10:9 “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” You repent of your sins that separates you from God, then believe that Jesus is Lord receiving Him into your heart.

He got quite angry with me. When I realized our conversation was going to soon come to an end I look at him in the eye and said,

“Brandon I have a message for you. You are deceived and you have been mislead into a cult. You will be accountable for every soul whose heart you turn away from God one day.”

So upset, he tried to hurl an insult or 2 at me but just politely I asked him and his friend to leave my table. I deeply felt sad for Brandon, because like him many fall from the faith if they are not rooted in truth. Its just like the scriptures say

“When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown into his heart.” Matthew 13:19

If you are reading this, you can say a short prayer for Brandon right now asking the Lord to return him to the truth of Jesus Christ. Please incude Vava, a girl who is a Jehovah Witness I have been meeting with regularly. She is deceived also believing Jesus is an arch angel, not God in the flesh. Thank you or praying.
